The first in our series of summer salons takes place on Tuesday 2nd July with Amanda Mackenzie Stuart, author of Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana Vreeland. Amanda will be talking to us about Diana’s life and work and how she came to write this comprehensive biography in an evening of bookchat and wine at our favourite venue, Drink, Shop & Do in Kings X.
We have long been fascinated by Mrs V, arch-editrix and tastemaker extraordinaire. She was the ultimate example of how clothing can be used to construct a better, truer version of yourself. Her influence can still be felt today – although no-one has ever come close to surpassing her vision, creative courage or pizzazz.
We have a lot of questions for Amanda about Diana’s life, in particular her attitude towards the burgeoning feminist movement in the ’60s, and her belief in the power of fashion to liberate rather than control women – there are so many contradictions and conundrums in her fascinating career and we can’t wait to unpick a few of them.
In addition to our conversation with Amanda and as with all our previous salons, there will be a ‘bookclub’ element to the evening where we will be discussing the glorious Flowers For Mrs Harris (also known as Mrs ‘Arris Goes To Paris) by Paul Gallico. This ’50s fairytale sees Mrs Harris, a not-remotely-humble charwoman, taking her hardearned savings off to Paris to buy a couture gown from Dior and the adventures she has along the way.
